At this point in his career, Zac Efron can take on pretty much any film role, endorsement, reading of the phone book, etc., and his die-hard fans will line up to see him. With such enthusiastic supporters, it could be easy to take them for granted and sign on to whatever project suits his fancy. When MTV News caught up with the teen heartthrob, however, we learned that this is not the case.

When asked why he took on his role in “Charlie St. Cloud,” out this Friday, instead of another musical, for example, Efron revealed that he puts a lot of thought into his fans’ wishes.

“I was trying to figure that out for so long,” Efron admitted. “What do the fans want to see? I could do another musical. I could stick to my guns and try to do more of that. Try and do another cool musical and try to stick with that genre. Is that really what the fans want to see? I mean everyone is like, ‘How can you make that transition? How are you going to get the fans to follow you into this new kind of stuff?’ ”

Efron said he doesn’t think it’s the responsibility of his fans to follow him, rather it’s his responsibility to stay relevant. “The only way that I know how to do that is to stay a little bit ahead of the audience. Experience life, make movies about those experiences, and by the time the audience catches up, and maybe realizes that life isn’t always like ‘High School Musical,’ maybe they will have a movie that helps them through that next challenge that they face in life.”

The forward-thinking 22-year-old added that he’d prefer his career to be based in that kind of relevance, rather than what he thinks is fun. “I don’t want to look back and say I just made movies because it was fun, you know? I want to make movies because it’s challenging and it’s an opportunity to help people. Otherwise it’s just, you know, kind of selfish, I think.”

HE IS one of Hollywood’s hottest young men but Zac Efron claims he’s not very bright or good at sport.

Instead the 22-year old, who dates the gorgeous Vanessa Hudgens, insists it’s all down to determination.

The heart-throb who played a basketball player in High School Musical, said: “While I may not be innately the best of every thing , I’m not the quickest in academics or sports, but if I put my mind to it, I can achieve it.”

He added: “I think about that, and then I see the looks on some of these girls ‘ faces and I hope I’m not disappointing them. I’m very proud to be that for them and I hope I can pull through.”

He’s certainly showing he’s more than just a pretty face after the end of High School Musical in movies including 17 Again and upcoming supernatural drama Charlie St Cloud.

Clearly Zac likes to push himself, as he proved faced with a bungee jump backflip last year during filming of Charlie St Cloud in Canada.

“Yeah, I got in trouble for that,” he laughed.

“It was the first time I’d ever done one but I asked the inst ructors what was the coolest way to jump off the bridge. I wanted to do it with style because everyone one kind of falls off the platform and it looks really awkward, I asked, ‘What would you do?’

“And the guy said, ‘I would do a gainer,’ which is like a forward running back flip. I said, ‘Is it easy?’ and he goes, ‘No, but it’s not that hard.’ “I was like, ‘OK, I’ll give it a try,” so I just did it.”

It shows Zac is willing to take risks, and this is bleeding into his career.

While he says he’d do another f ilm that involved singing in the future, for now he’s trying to follow the lead of his hero Leonardo DiCaprio, who went from child star to adult superstar.

Zac said: “I didn’t want to just keep doing what was working. I wanted to try something new.

“It was kind of scary to get there, but that’s what I wanted, to get pushed.”

Vanessa Hudgens has got quite a wait on her hands if she wants to become Mrs. Zac Efron – the movie hunk won’t be getting wed until he turns 30.

The 22-year-old 17 Again star admits he’s still be smitten with Hudgens, his former High School Musical co-star, but has no plans to marry her anytime soon.

Zac Efron is proving he is more than just a pretty face by starring in and producing a new comedy for Warner Brothers.

The High School Musical star, who set up his production company Ninjas Runnin’ Wild with manager Jason Barrett, will be working on an untitled workplace comedy with the team behind box office hit 17 Again, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The script has been written by Jason Filardi, and Adam Shankman and Jennifer Gibgot are in talks to come on as co-producers.

Zac is also looking to start work on a number of projects at NRW including Art Of The Steal, based on a Wired magazine article about a master thief, and time-travel story Einstein Theory.

There’s also Fire, based on the Brian Michael Bendis graphic novel about a college student recruited to take part in a special CIA training program, and Snabba Cash, a remake of a Swedish action thriller about a young man who becomes a runner for a drug dealer.

Zac’s next big screen outing will see him playing the title role in fantasy-romance Charlie St Cloud alongside Kim Basinger and Ray Liotta.

“I’ve never had a better day surfing,” Efron told E! News at the Maui Film Festival Thursday night.

“If you’re going to go, you need to go here. The conditions are unbelievable. In California, the waves kind of toss you around. There always seems to be an offshore breeze.

“Here in Maui, I was out there and the water was so glassy and clear. It was like a bathtub. The waves just stay wide open for long rides in.”

Speaking to Access Hollywood, the Hannah Montana star – currently dating Liam Hemsworth – discussed the differences between men and women in the music industry, and how there are double standards when it comes to dressing provocatively.

Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens were among the stars caught on the Kiss Cam at last night’s MTV Movie Awards.

The camera landed on the High School Musical co-stars after The A-Team’s Bradley Cooper and Jessica Biel took to the stage to present the trophy for ‘Best Kiss’.

Biel had told the audience not to get “excited” because she and Cooper would not be making out, saying that instead the people in the arena would be kissing.

After Hudgens gave Efron a quick kiss, the camera landed on other couples including Get Him To The Greek castmates Jonah Hill and Russell Brand, who also shared an embrace, and snowboarder Shaun White and his date, while Jersey Shore star The Situation pretended to chase Clark Duke out of the ceremony after the latter kissed his date.

The ‘Best Kiss’ gong went to Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart for The Twilight Saga: New Moon. The duo previously declined to kiss when they won the prize last year, but this time they treated viewers to a re-enactment of their winning moment.
